The Kansas DOT Safety Initiative has announced a funding opportunity of $2 million to support groundbreaking transportation projects designed to enhance safety and integrate new technology across the state.
The program, led by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), aims to encourage both governmental and nongovernmental entities to introduce creative, data-driven solutions that improve travel efficiency and public safety.
Under the Kansas DOT Safety Initiative
Under the Kansas DOT Safety Initiative, projects may be submitted in several categories, including:
- Aviation
- Public Transit
- Rail
- Roadway Infrastructure
- Software and Technology Systems
- Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drones)
Kansas DOT Safety Initiative defines “innovative technology” as any system or solution that currently does not exist in the project’s local community. This definition opens doors for engineers, researchers, and public agencies to pilot experimental technologies that could transform transportation safety statewide.
Before applying, project teams must submit a concept proposal for KDOT approval. Once accepted, they can complete the official application process. The deadline for concept submissions is November 17, followed by the final application deadline on November 30, 2025.
By promoting innovation, KDOT seeks to position Kansas as a leader in safe, technology-driven mobility—aligning with the state’s long-term goal of reducing roadway accidents and enhancing digital infrastructure.
